Spirit is a gentle pony, who is generally good to handle once she has got to know you and you understand the way she is happy for things to be done. She needs time to get to know her handlers. She would benefit from a one to one home with an adult handler in a quiet home. Any applicants will need to be prepared to travel several times to get to know her.

Spirit mixes well in a herd and settles well with both mares and geldings. She has been good to leave in a stable by herself whilst her friends are exercised. She is respectful of electric fencing.

Spirit does have sweet itch, although this is easily managed with lotions and her rugs, which will come with her to her new home. She would not be suited to lush grazing. Poorer, restricted grazing would help to manage her weight as she is a native type that can easily put on weight.

Spirit can become unsettled when needing routine care, such as vaccinations and the farrier and has been trained using positive reinforcement which has been extremely successful and this would need to be continued regularly by any sanctuary at home carer. We are able to provide training and support for this. She needs someone with the time to dedicate to her ongoing training needs. She enjoys going for walks and other forms of enrichment.

Spirit is on daily medication for her mobility this and will need monitoring by a vet. She is being rehomed on our Prime Pastures scheme, where we can contribute towards the cost of her veterinary care.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
